United Street Food

United Street Food was a festival created to bring together Berlin locals with refugees from the Syrian crisis through a grand celebration of the newcomers' food cultures. The festival put together Syrian chefs and members of refugee initiatives with established local vendors and food lovers for a colourful feast under one massive roof: the iconic Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg, Berlin.

A visual feast

In late 2015, Souk Berlin reached out about creating a visual identity for one of their first major fundraising projects, United Street Food. At a time when the majority of media and political conversations in Germany centred around the negative effects of the Syrian refugee crisis on the country, Souk Berlin sought to bring newcomers and locals together through food.

I worked closely with the Souk Berlin founders to shape the vision into a distinct visual identity. Together, we set out on visual research digging into Syrian food culture and alongside, studying local Middle Eastern grocery shops along Neukölln, discovering a cornucopia of textures, colours, patterns and of course, flavours; which stand in sharp contrast to the German palate.

As the event was a fundraiser with a limited budget, I worked on transforming this inspiration into digital-first, shareable concepts. With motion as a key element, the result was a moving poster to be amplified across social media. Offline material such as flyers and posters were printed in Riso, lending a beautiful tactile feel with unexpected visual textures.

The first food festival took place in July 2016 to a vibrant grid of stalls against the backdrop of some melodious live music ringing through the halls of Markthalle Neun.
